🖤 Tawa River 


▪️Tawa River is a tributary of the Narmada River of Central India. 


▪️ The river rises from the Satpura Range of Betul in MP. 


▪️ Tawa is the Narmada's longest tributary, at 172 km.  


▪️ It rises in the Satpura Range of Betul and flowing north and west, joins the Narmada at the village of Bandra Bhan in Hoshangabad District.


▪️ In 1958, construction began on Tawa Dam, which was completed in 1978 in Tawa Nagar to create Tawa Reservoir in southern Hoshangabad District. Forty-four villages were submerged by the reservoir.

🖤 Brahmaputra River


▪️The Brahmaputra (meaning the son of Brahma).


▪️It is 2,900 km in length.


▪️Source: Chemayungdung glacier (Kailas Range) at an elevation of about 5,150 m. It’s source is very close to the sources of Indus and Satluj.


▪️Mariam La separates the source of the Brahmaputra from the Manasarovar Lake.


▪️ In the vast Ganges Delta, it merges with the Padma, the popular name of the river Ganges in Bangladesh, and finally, after merging with Padma, it becomes the Meghna and from here, it flows as Meghna river before emptying into the Bay of Bengal

Left - Dibang river, Dhansiri river, Lohit river and kolong river


Right - kameng river, Manas river, Teesta river, Subansiri river.

▪️The Luni or the Salt River (Lonari or Lavanavari in Sanskrit) is named so because its water is brackish below Balotra. 


▪️It is also known as the Sagarmati. 


▪️It originates from Western slopes of the Aravalli ranges near Ajmer.

 

▪️Its total catchment area falls in Rajasthan


▪️Luni is the only river basin of any significance in Western Rajasthan, which form the bulk of arid zone. 


▪️Luni originates from western slopes of the  Aravalli ranges at an elevation of 772m near Ajmer flowing in South West direction and traversing a course of 511 km in Rajasthan, it finally flow into the Rann of Kachchh (it gets lost in the marsh)


▪️Most of its tributaries drain the steep   north west of Aravalli hills and join it on left side.

🖤 Damodar river


▪️ Damodar river rises in the hills of the Chotanagpur plateau and flows through a rift valley. 


▪️Damodar River is a river flowing across the Indian states of Jharkhand and West Bengal. 


▪️Damodar River is known as Damudar


▪️The word damu stands for holy and da signifies water


▪️Rich in mineral resources, the valley is home to large-scale mining and  

industrial activity


▪️ It has a number of tributaries and subtributaries, such as Barakar,  

Konar, Bokaro, Haharo, etc


▪️The Barakar is the most important tributary of the Damodar


▪️Several dams have been constructed in the valley, for the generation of hydroelectric power


▪️The valley is called “the Ruhr of India”


▪️The first dam was built across the Barakar River, a tributary of the Damodar river


▪️It used to cause devastating floods as a result of which it earned the name "Sorrow of Bengal"

 

▪️Now the river is tamed by constructing numerous dams


▪️It joins the Hugli River 48 km below Kolkata

■ SATLUJ RIVER


◇ Other names - Satadru or Satudri.


◇ Called Langechan Khambab in Tibet.


◇ Rises from Rakas Lake situated near Mansarovar lake in Tibet.


◇ At the pass of Shipki la it enters HP where it cuts through Zaskar and Himalayan ranges.


◇ Below Bhakra Dam it enters in Punjab plains.


◇ It meets Beas in the south-west corner of Kapurthala.


◇ From Ferozepur to Fazilka it forms boundary between India and Pakistan.


◇ During it onward journey, it receives collective drainage of Ravi, Chenab & Jhelum River.


◇ It joins Indus few Kms above Mithankot.

■ JHELUM RIVER


◇ Originates in a spring at Verinag in Kashmir valley.


◇ It flows northward into wular lake.


◇ The river forms a steep sided narrow gorge through Pir panjal range below Baramula.


◇ At Muzzarabad it takes South-ward bend.


◇ After that it forms the India-Pak boundary for 170km and emerges near Mirpur.


◇ It joins the Chenab at Trimmu

■ CHENAB RIVER (Asikni)


◇ Also known as Chandra-Bhaga in HP.


◇ Chandra and Bhaga are two different tributaries originate on either side of Bara-Lacha paas in Lahaul district of HP.


◇ Chandra and Bhaga make confluence at Tandi.


◇ Near Kishtwar it makes a south turn and flows across the pir panjal at Riasi to enter Pakistan.


◇ It joins Sutlej after receiving water from Jhelum and Ravi rivers.

◇ It drains into Chenab near Rangpur in Pakistan Punjab.

◾️ BEAS RIVER


1. Rises at BEAS KUND near southern face of Rohtang pass in Kullu.


2. It cuts through a Dhauladhar range in a deep gorge near Koti and Larji.


3. Then it flows from North to South along Manali and Kullu Towns.


4. Further down, It flows through a Kangra valley and then turns west to enter the Punjab plain.


5. It finally passes through Kapurthala and Amritsar and joins sutlej near Harike.
